n this three part article, you’ll find many tools that any webmaster can use to monitor your site’s search engine position, and use to increase the visibility of your site in major search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

URL Trends
http://www.urltrends.com/

Most of the coverage I've seen focuses on the ability of UrlTrends to allow you to "View Any URLs Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, Popular Search Terms and Incoming Links".

And that's a great thing, to be able to see all of that from one place. But one great thing missed about this tool are that you can subscribe to changes to the results via RSS -hands off monitoring of your site.

Fagan Finder’s URL Info
http://www.faganfinder.com/urlinfo/

This online gadget is like the Swiss Army knife of site information, giving you one-page access to dozens of pertinent check-ups. But monitoring relevant search engine information like your backlinks, or the cached pages in a search engine are just the tip of the iceberg.

You can use URL Info to check that your HTML code is validated, translate your page, and if you’re a blogger, discover where your site is mentioned in the blogosphere.

Spannerwork’s Spider Simulator
http://www.spannerworks.com/spidersimulator.0.html

Ever wondered what your site looks like to the search engine spiders that crawl the web, looking for information to include in their databases? Go to this page to see what information is seen by the spider and what it skips over.

Spannerworks.com can also help you figure out how to troubleshoot content that seems like it should show up to a spider but doesn’t, with its HTTP viewer. They also have a tool that will analyze your keyword density.

GoRank.com’s Top Ten Comparison
http://www.gorank.com/seotools/

If you’ve been banging your head against the wall in an attempt to figure out why you haven’t hit the top ten results in Google, GoRank.com has a page that can give you important clues to help you figure it out. One of my favorites, the Top Ten comparison report, will scrub the raw data of the top ranking results for a given keyword.

In studying the results, you may find it easier to understand where your own optimization efforts are going wrong. Don’t forget to stop by Google for your API key at http://www.google.com/api as you’ll need it to create your free account.

Search Guild’s Keyword Difficulty Checker
http://searchguild.com/difficulty/

This one’s an old favorite of mine. When you find what you may think is an ideal keyword, before you start tweaking your pages, it’s a good idea to run it through this tester. Using the Google API, it analyzes whether or not a given phrase will be worth your efforts.

You’ll already have to be well-versed in how to find good keywords to plug into the tool, but once you have that nailed, it’s pretty reliable in telling you whether it’s worth your time to target that phrase. If you use flash on your site, check out the flash viewer on their utilities page as well.

In the next article in this series, you can read more about tools specific to Yahoo and Google that will help you track your rankings and study your site.

Correct positioning of your Google adsense ads

Correct positioning of your Google adsense ads can make or break your success with the Google adsense program. Why is this true? Some studies suggest that eye positioning on website gravitate to particular sections of web pages. And if you don’t have the necessary ads in these positions you will not get the clicks.

I talked to countless people that have great traffic, some with 300 to 1000 new visitors a day that say that they only make approx. at max $10 to $20 dollars a month on the adsense program. What a shame. But when I look at their websites the ads are either buried in wording that no one usually pays attention to or the ads are located in positions that just don’t call any attention to their presence.

So were the best locations for you Google adsense ads. Well, I have found the number one best place for the ads are near or in proximity to your main menu. Why near your main menu. Because you know that visitors eyes will and always look for the menu structure of your website. So the common places for placement should be to the top right, the very top under your menu, or the top left. These are the most common locations for you main menu.

But what about the color scheme of the Google adsense ads? Yes, color is very important. You have to make the ads looks as seamless as possible. Here is an example on one of my website http://www.pottery-barn-outlet.com. Here I decided to position the ads at the very top right under my main menu. In direct eye contact. Also, remove the borders; just these two changes will increase your adsense proceeds one hundred percent.

By using these tactics I was able to increase my adsense click through rate significantly depending on traffic level and people's interest.

Take my advice and give it try. I believe you will see a change and hopefully make adsense a more pleasurable experience.

Adsense – When should you use it?
by: Joanne King

Well I have several sites, some of them I apply the AdSense to; to make a few extra pennies and some of my websites I wouldn’t even dream of placing Adsense to.

For example, I will not use AdSense on a site that I wish to sell one product on, especially my own products. This can take your potential prospects away from what you want them to buy. Why would you risk losing them to your competition or to another site for a few lousy cents? Or dollars if you got the “higher” end priced AdSense ads on your site.

All sites where I am selling a specific product will not have any out going links for me. I want to keep them on my site for as long as possible.

However, I will use AdSense on sites that are more along the lines of “Free Content” websites. Usually these websites I set up, I use directly for making money with AdSense.

What’s interesting with AdSense is that your layout can have a detrimental affect on how much you can earn from using it. Of course testing and re-testing will be your ultimate tool in finding out what works best with your website.

I tend to stay clear of the lay out that looks like Google’s sponsored ads on the main Google website. Everyone identifies these ads as “paid” and not as likely to have as many people to click through them.

Adsense can be a nice little profitable tool if used correctly.

The 10 biggest lies about SEO and Websites

1. You do not need to know html to have a good website Websites that are made are maintained without knowledge of html are passed left and right by sites that know what they are doing. Knowing your html will give you a large advantage over sites that do now. There are many websites sold with the promise that they can be maintained knowledge of HTML. This might be true but the options usually are minimal and important parts of a website are generated automatically and are beyond the control of the webmaster. for example the underlying structure of links, folders, internal references etc are not easy to maintain. 2. Company X ensures high positions in search engines Only search engines determine the position of a site in the results. The rules of most search engines change several times a month. A search engine optimization company can help a website to optimize on desired keywords. It can help to structure a website. It may help to build links and it can help determine all the weaknesses on a web site. This generally ensures that a site ranks higher in search engines but there are never guarantees. 3. Advertising is a great way to get more customers and revenue A good site will (over time and with some effort) always be found! If as site is not found without advertising, there is probably something wrong with the website or the strategy. If there are customers on the website but earnings are low there is also probably something wrong with the site. Perhaps the site lacks the connection with the customers or the site is not informative enough. The site may be unclear or take too long to respond. The order process may be too difficult or long. In this case it makes no sense for a large advertising budget to lead visitors to your page while the underlying reason that the page does not perform still exists. 4. You do not have to worry about your hosting provider Most hosters have their servers set up to optimally configured for their own interest. That is not always in the interest of the customer. Many shared hosting providers (identified by their hosting packages) just try to puy many customers on one server as they can. Their server response is ofter set to a catch all default. A good server however is set up to serve a correct response to different types of requests. Pages of text are not allowed to be stored locally but images, style sheets and javascript files should be cached locally. A correct server response should be different for those file-types. A correct server response may cause a speed improvement of 300%! That can make a difference between a popular site and a not so popular site. 5. A good layout makes your site easier to find Layout has no direct effect on your search engine results. Search engines ignore layout when indexing a website but focus on the content and descriptions. It is true that a good layout can provide a better user experience which in turn can result in more links to a website. It is very important in a good design to have enough room for good content and not to just focus on eye candy. 6. Social media like Facebook and Twitter will help you get more visitors It is true that social media like facebook and twitter may help a website get more visitors but the reality is often different. Much energy, time and a good social marketing campaign is needed before social media can be effective. Sometimes it is more effective not to bother with social media but focus on the quality of your website. Once the website is in order and there is a good social media strategy social media can be effective ! 7. More visitors means more conversion A good website has a good connection to it's target audience. Writing popular articles or advertising on popular pages may attract manu visitors but if there is no connection between the visitors and the page they will leave just as quickly! So make sure that articles and advertising etc target the right audience. 8. Meta tags help improve the ranking of a page The meta tags of a site are becoming less important as search engines grow a better understanding of the web. Meta tags are just no longer needed. The meta keywords tag is almost useless in google and the meta description is only important because it is displayed alongside search results. 9. You need to submit your site to search engines and directories There are many (paid) options to submit your site to multiple search engines and directories. Do not buy it ! Search engines find your site once there are links to it. With good links and good content your site will do better and better search engine results. 10. Optimization is difficult and takes time and money Website optimization can indeed be a lot of work but not if you start doing it properly right now. Make sure when you create or modify a page, the page just right. Tell a good story that matches your target audience. Do not make mistakes in the html and use the elements for which they are intended. The web is full of HTML optimization tips and tutorials (including this site). Not every tip is as important or good but overall the tips and tutorials are easy to follow and make good sense. Take a moment to find out about html and SEO that is an investment that pays itself back!

Guidelines To A Successful Link Exchange Program For Driving More Traffic To Your Website

If you are writing articles in order to generate traffic to yourwebsite, than you are also familiar with keywords. So, this is how thispart of it works. You have your website up and it has a theme. You wantto drive customers to the website. So, you write articles that have thetheme in it. The search engines pick it up and up your rankings becausethey see more keywords that are legitimate.
And, if you want, you can take the articles and put them in articledirectories… the hundreds and hundreds of them… Put that with a link onthe bottom of the article and magic… you have more links, more keywordsand more to your website.
It’s all very logical and robotic, isn’t it? So, as someone whowrites these things for a living, I would have to say… there’s a lotmore to it than that. Called quality. And, now, because the market isso saturated with thousands of articles, you have to have quality.Otherwise, it’s a waste of your breath.
Okay, get your keywords, put them in your articles and let it go.Guess what? If you don’t have them in there, it doesn’t matter.Because, if you stick with the right theme, you’ll have other keywordsin there that say the same thing. And, you will be taking yourself outof the competition that way. Take for instance, if you want the wordcalendar in your keywords. Well, would if you use ‘telling time’instead, or ‘dates” instead? Guess what? It still does the same thing.
It’s always quantity over the rest of it. Keywords are definitelysomething that have been mis-calculated because people want tocalculate them. If it doesn’t fit, something else will. Or, you canalways put it in another article to have it fit somewhere else. It willsound better, people will like you more for being legitimate and havingsomething to say and you will still get the traffic that you wantdriven to your site.

5 Ways To Improve Your Adsense Earnings

5 Ways To Improve Your Adsense Earnings

If webmasters want to monetize their websites, the great way to do it is through Adsense. There are lots of webmasters struggling hard to earn some good money a day through their sites. But then some of the “geniuses” of them are enjoying hundreds of dollars a day from Adsense ads on their websites. What makes these webmasters different from the other kind is that they are different and they think out of the box.

The ones who have been there and done it have quite some useful tips to help those who would want to venture into this field. Some of these tips have boosted quite a lot of earnings in the past and is continuously doing so.

Here are some 5 proven ways on how best to improve your Adsense earnings.

1. Concentrating on one format of Adsense ad. The one format that worked well for the majority is the Large Rectangle (336X280). This same format have the tendency to result in higher CTR, or the click-through rates. Why choose this format out of the many you can use? Basically because the ads will look like normal web links, and people, being used to clicking on them, click these types of links. They may or may not know they are clicking on your Adsense but as long as there are clicks, then it will all be for your advantage.

2. Create a custom palette for your ads. Choose a color that will go well with the background of your site. If your site has a white background, try to use white as the color of your ad border and background. The idea to patterning the colors is to make the Adsense look like it is part of the web pages. Again, This will result to more clicks from people visiting your site.

3. Remove the Adsense from the bottom pages of your site and put them at the top. Do not try to hide your Adsense. Put them in the place where people can see them quickly. You will be amazed how the difference between Adsense locations can make when you see your earnings.

4. Maintain links to relevant websites. If you think some sites are better off than the others, put your ads there and try to maintaining and managing them. If there is already lots of Adsense put into that certain site, put yours on top of all of them. That way visitor will see your ads first upon browsing into that site.

5. Try to automate the insertion of your Adsense code into the webpages using SSI (or server side included). Ask your web administrator if your server supports SSI or not. How do you do it? Just save your Adsense code in a text file, save it as “adsense text”, and upload it to the root directory of the web server. Then using SSI, call the code on other pages. This tip is a time saver especially for those who are using automatic page generators to generate pages on their website.

These are some of the tips that have worked well for some who want to generate hundreds and even thousands on their websites. It is important to know though that ads are displayed because it fits the interest of the people viewing them. So focusing on a specific topic should be your primary purpose because the displays will be especially targeted on a topic that persons will be viewing already.

Note also that there are many other Adsense sharing the same topic as you. It is best to think of making a good ad that will be somewhat different and unique than the ones already done. Every clickthrough that visitors make is a point for you so make every click count by making your Adsense something that people will definitely click on.

Tips given by those who have boosted their earnings are just guidelines they want to share with others. If they have somehow worked wonders to some, maybe it can work wonders for you too. Try them out into your ads and see the result it will bring.

If others have done it, there is nothing wrong trying it out for yourself.

Blogging Explained in Simple Terms
by: Elizabeth Kirwin
By now, if you havent heard of Blogging, you must be in a coma, seldom watch or listen to the news, or never use the internet. Bloggers are the newest and most popular authentic voice on the internet.

Blogging Defined

First, lets begin with an accurate definition of Blogging. Blog is short for Web Log. To blog is to upload text onto the same place on the internet daily, weekly, monthly, or at least with some predictable frequency. The best bloggers are trained professional writers, people who write because its their passion, and politically inclined individuals who need a bully pulpit for their ideas. Some bloggers are traveling long distance over an extended period of time, and they want to communicate with family and friends. The traveling bloggers do not have enough time to e-mail everyone so they blog. Family and friends can check their blog for updates on their whereabouts, their adventures, mishaps, and golden opportunities while theyre on the road.

Is Blog a Noun, Verb, or Adjective?

I have seen Blog used as a noun, verb and adjective. This means blogging is a thing, an active principle, and a way to describe something. If you want to blog (verb) and do it well, the best advice is to blog on a subject you know quite a good deal about. Chances are, most people who blog with a good solid background in their subject area, do not readily run out of good material. Also, people who read blogs (noun) constructed in this way will walk away enriched, educated on a particular subject, and are more likely to return.

Blogging as Gossip or for Profits

As a professional writer and a creative writer, I am enjoying the popularity of the blogger (noun). Why? Because bloggers are bringing back respect for the individual voice in writing. Their popularity is sometimes based upon the depth of their knowledge on a particular subject. Or, as in the case of bloggers who helped reveal the true identity of White House Press Corps gay hustler Jeff Gannon, bloggers can turn a little vicious gossip into an international news story, which I personally find amusing and enlightening. Since bloggers uncovered this scandalous mans double life, blogging has gained a great deal of attention. In fact, marketing and public relations firms are now using blogging as a tool in their whole package of increasing a clients media visibility.

Public Relations and Marketing Blogging

If the Public Relations and Marketing firms gain a stronghold on blogging activities, perhaps the authentic individual voice that began the blogging craze will be lost in the rubble. This is the worry of many devoted bloggers. Or, maybe this trend could strengthen the position of political or gossip oriented bloggers. Perhaps the devoted bloggers who were working in the restaurant and retail industry, will now find theyre being offered the opportunity to blog for money instead of slave away over a hot grill, or at a cash register.

This is where the whole blogging debate takes over.

Ethical versus Unethical Blogging

Who actually has the right to blog? What does an authentic blogger look and feel and sound like? How do you identify a slick, Public Relations blogger? Should blogging remain in the realm of the individual voice? Or will it be usurped by multinational corporations and governments for their own devious purposes? These are all valid questions, and Im afraid I do not possess an answer to any of these ethical questions about blogging. I feel that the individual person, company, or entity must answer these questions on their own. But there is one thing I am absolutely certain about. Everyone has a right to blog, just as every one has a right to write and publish their work in the public sphere, which includes the internet.

5 ways of efficient offline promotion for your website

Have you considered offline promotion methods? True that your business may be essentially online but the people browsing your site and buying your products have a non-internet presence too! Have you ever tried to reach out to them when they are not connected to the internet? This is an area of promotion that falls into the blind spot of most webmasters. Offline marketing tactics might not drive as much traffic as an online marketing campaign, but they will prove to be a very cost-effective way to build credibility. You’re URL or website address is obviously the key here. The more exposure your URL receives the more traffic you will send to your website. Business Cards It is considered customary to put your signature when you post on forums and someone not doing so is viewed as one who is losing some traffic everyday. So, it comes as a surprise to me as to why so many of us shy away from putting our business urls on our business cards. In fact, the business card will last longer than the forum threads on search engines and are potential business hooks whenever the need arises. Having a business card is a great way to introduce people you meet in day-to-day life about your blogging activity. Business cards are also very inexpensive to purchase with most costing less than 1 cent per card. Newspapers and Magazines These are a very good source of advertising because so many people use them. It can be quite expensive to run full page color adverts in the national papers and glossy magazines, but you can start small. As a first step, you could try running a small advert in the classified section of your local papers. As your traffic and your business grow, you can move on to the larger national papers. Also, it would be worth finding out what sort of cost is involved in advertising in publications that gear more towards your specific product or service. This way you have more of a chance of reaching your target audience. Remember that people cannot copy and paste from newspapers to their browser’s address bar! Keep the urls simple and human readable. Promotional Items Give away items such as Pens, coffee mugs, key chains, coasters, calendars, sticky notesArticle Search, etc. should have your company logo and web address. Apart from building brand this also work as a dailyreminder for users of these items. Readers Meet-up If you have a substantial local reader base or live in a large metropolis, hold an official gathering for readers and people interested in your niche. It doesn’t have to be anything more than a casual get together to simply talk about the industry. This is a great way to strengthen the bond of your community and find new local readers. You can choose to hold these meetings at your home or at a more local and convenient location such as a restaurant, coffee shop, or even park. Company Vehicles How many vans, lorries and cars do you see everyday with phone numbers and company names plastered all over them. Your website address can be added to any part of your vehicle with a sticker, this exposes your URL to thousands of people everyday who are driving to work, going to the shops or even walking the dog. Make sure that you have this done professionally though. If it looks badly designed, it will probably reflect badly on your company.

New enhancements to Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger

New enhancements to Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger:

Back in April, we introduced Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger, a gadget that can help you earn money by adding an ad for a relevant product to a blog post and earning a commission when someone clicks on your ad and makes a purchase. We’ve received positive feedback from Blogger users and the advertisers who have made their products available through the gadget, and wanted to let you know about a couple of recent enhancements we’ve made to this gadget:

  • Increased availability: When this gadget first launched, you may not have been able to see the gadget even though you have an AdSense account. We’ve changed this so that all Blogger users located in the U.S. with an AdSense account have the ability to see that gadget in their post editor and can sign up to use Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger. If you tried to find the “Advertise Products” gadget and didn’t see it before, try again!
  • More advertisers and products: The types of advertisers and products available when the gadget became available were in categories such as Department Stores, Sport and Fitness, Office Supplies, Home & Garden, and Apparel & Accessories. We’ve now added 40 more advertisers and expanded our offering to include products in the Health & Beauty, Jewelry, Flowers Edibles & Gifts, Education, and other categories.

Google Affiliate Ads for Blogger is easy to use, and is a great solution for those users interested in choosing the products and brands they want to promote in their blog posts.

Here are two examples of a Blogger user finding a relevant affiliate ad:

Free instant auction traffic
by: Jason James
Copyright 2005 Auction Resource Network

Here's an easy way to get extra traffic to your eBay auctions...

...and we all know, the more traffic, the more bids and ultimately, the more sales you'll get!

First...answer this question:

"Do you look at other people's feedback ratings?"

You probably answered yes...

So here's my idea -

"Whenever you leave feedback, put your website URL in the feedback Comment"

If you don't have a website, no problem, see below for details.

I have only seen this done once! - me.

It's so easy and EVERYONE looks at feedback ratings before they bid.

So, the idea would be to try and leave feedback for users that get a lot of traffic...

How? - check out ebay pulse and look at some of the highest watched items and try bidding on one of them.

After, you bid and win, leave your feedback with your website URL in your feedback comment.

For example,

**AuctionResourceNetwork.com** - Excellent communication and great eBayer, Highly recommended

You can see how the domain will *jump-out* at the reader.

Also, when you leave feedback for your auction sales, do the same.

Now.., if you don't have a website, here's a quick trick on how to direct that traffic to your about me page.

Simply create a free account at NameCheap.com and purchase a domain name, i.e. www.your-domain.com

NameCheap.com only charges $8.88 per year for your domain name!

...then, in your NameCheap.com account, you can set your new domain to redirect to your eBay about me page...here's how:

Login to your NameCheap.com account
Click the 'view' link beside 'Number of domains in your account'
Click your new domain name
Click URL Forwarding under the Host Management section on the left
Enter your about me page URL in both textboxes and click Save Changes
Viola...you now own a domain that redirects to your about me page!
And make sure you place your new domain name in all your feedback comments.

Ok...now that you know how to get some extra free traffic by using eBay's feedback comments, answer this question:

"Do you want to know how to turn that extra FREE traffic into cash?"

Yes/No? - Well, I'm going to tell you anyways... ;-) There are a few things you can do...here are 2:

Place your auction links on your AboutMe page so that your new visitors can get to your auctions. Place a newsletter signup form in your AboutMe page as well as in your auction pages and collect leads. Then market to those leads over and over again. I think the second idea is the most powerful...although it takes a little work on your part.

The quick`n`dirty way is to use AWeber.com to manage your leads and use their capture web form generator to capture your lead's name and email address.

BUT, there are certain rules you must obey in order to collect client information from your auctions pages as well as you about Me page.

A Guide to INTERNET MARKETING TERMS

In the beginning…

I recently started my own “money-making, home business” which I signed up to with the understanding that I was going to earn money for doing nothing. Others (affiliates) were going to pay me commission for referring new sign-ups to their sites. This sounded like a fantastic opportunity to make lots of money without really selling anything. No stocks holding, postage etc.

My signup included (among other items) a guide which covers 30 days. I also had to sign-up to 5 online marketing sites (you receive the enrolment fee back in no time) and join a web-hosting company.

Massive amounts of information are fed to you but in an absorbable manner. It was very exiting. I would liken this information to reading a suspense novel…can’t wait to see what happens next!

Anyway this article is not meant to be about that…it’s meant to cover some of the terminology and their definitions, some of which I had never heard before.

AdSense

AdSense is a fast and easy way for website publishers of all sizes to display relevant ads on their website's content pages and earn money. Because the ads are related to what your visitors are looking for on your site — or matched to the characteristics and interests of the visitors your content attracts — you'll finally have a way to both monetise and enhance your content pages.
It's also a way for website publishers to provide web and site search to their visitors, and to earn money by displaying ads on the search results pages.

Adwords

With AdWords you create your own ads, choose keywords to help us match your ads to your audience and pay only when someone clicks on them.

Affiliate

A person, organization, or establishment associated with another as a subordinate, subsidiary, or member: network affiliates.

Auto-Responder

This is a clever marketing tool. It automates your emails and follows-up on potential clients after they have signed up to your newsletter etc.

Blog

An online diary or personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page; also called Weblog, Web log. Typically updated daily, blogs often reflect the personality of the author. It is a shortened form of Weblog.

Ezine

A magazine that is published electronically, especially on the Internet.

Keyword

A word used as a reference point for finding other words or information. See Adwords.

Off-line Marketing

As an example, advertising in newspapers, radio and television. Using the phone as a off-line marketing tool has also become very popular.

On-line Marketing

Advertising using the internet, examples may include…email, banners, popups etc.

Opt-In/Opt-out Subscribers

This is when you choose you receive newsletters etc. via email. Example:

By doing this you opt-in to an email mailing list. These lists are sold over the internet by various marketing companies. Most emails sent via the opt-in method also have an opt-out choice. Use this when you no longer wish to receive email from the marketer. When you have no choice it is referred to as SPAM.

Ping

A protocol that sends a message to another computer and waits for acknowledgment, often used to check if another computer on a network is reachable.
You need to use ping your blog to get it online. (easy as pie)

Sig File

A block of text at the end of a message identifying the sender and providing additional information for instance, web/e-mail address.

Solo Ad

This is advertising via email attached to an ezine. This is only one ad (as apposed to many small ads from various companies), thus giving you maximum exposure.

Viral Marketing

This works similar to a virus but instead of being destructive it encourages people to pass along a marketing message.

The Evolution of Google AdSense

The web has evolved into a complex "organism" which, to some, appears to have a life of its own. As the Internet has evolved, so too have online marketers and publishers. The dot-com balloon is said to have burst but savvy publishers have grabbed the coat tails of the Google search monster and employ Google AdSense on content-rich websites. Google AdSense, a pioneer for providing content-sensitive advertisements, has been a boon to webmasters looking for alternatives to amortize their web trafffic.

How Does Google AdSense Work?
The concept is simple: The publisher or webmaster inserts a java script into a website. Each time the page is accessed, the java script pulls advertisements from Google's AdSense program. The ads are targeted and related to the content contained on the web page serving the ad. If a web surfer clicks on an advertisement served from Google, the webmaster serving the ad earns a portion of the money that the advertiser is paying Google for the click.

Google handles all the tracking and payments, ultimately providing an easy way for webmasters to display content-sensitive, targeted ads, without the headache of having to solicit advertisers, collect funds, monitor clicks or track statistics, any of which could easily become a full-time job.

While Google AdSense, like many pay-per-click programs, is plagued by claims of click-fraud, it is clearly an effective revenue source for many reputable web businesses. There seems to be no shortage of advertisers in the AdWords program from which Google pulls the AdSense ads. Webmasters seem less concerned by the lack of information provided by Google and more interested in cashing their monthly checks from Google.

The Evolution of AdSense
While Google's initial system was fairly rudimentary, only providing publishers the option of displaying a handful of advertising formats, the technology behind even the first ads was anything but simplistic. The technology used to employ Google AdSense goes far beyond simple keyword or category matching. A complex algorithm is used to determine the content contained on the web page serving the ad. Once the content is assessed, and appropriate ads that contain related content are served.

Early on, Google implemented a system that allows publishers to filter advertisements from competitors or sites which they deemed inappropriate. Google also allows vendors to specify an alternative advertisement, in the unlikely event that Google is unable to provide related content ads.

The Progression of Google
Google has come a long way in understanding the needs of publishers and webmasters. Google now offers a system that allows full ad customization. Webmasters can choose from twelve text ad formats and can customize Google advertisements to complement their website and fit into existing webpage layout. The options provided allow webmasters to select and create custom color palettes that match an existing website's color scheme, making the ads a much more natural fit.

Many sites have been able to integrate ads into their site design using different ad formats.

Online Reports
Google recently took a huge step forward, providing publishers the ability to track their earnings based on webmaster-defined channels. Recent improvements to the Google AdSense reporting have resulted in webmasters having the capability to monitor an ad's performance with customizable online reports that can detail page impressions, clicks and click-through rates. Webmasters now have the ability to track specific ad formats, colors and pages within a website. Webmasters can quickly spot and track trends. The new flexible reporting tools allows webmasters to group web pages by URL, domain, ad type or category, providing webmasters insight into what pages, ads and domains are performing the best.

Reporting is real-time, allowing webmasters to quickly assess the effectiveness of any changes. The new reporting makes it significantly easier for webmasters to optimize and increase click-through rates. Optional reporting allows webmasters to monitor traffic, viewing both ad impressions and page impressions.

Advertisers realize the benefits associated with having their ads served on targeted websites, increasing the likelihood that a prospective web surfer will have an interest in their product or service.

Truth Still Not Revealed
Google still does not reveal what percentage of the advertising revenue earned is paid to the webmaster serving the ads, but they have made strides related to disclosure, recently lifting the ban preventing webmasters from disclosing the amount they earn through serving Google ads.

10 Great things NOT to do with Google AdSense

Adsense is beginning to make a huge impact on the affiliate marketing industry today. Because of this, weak affiliate merchants have the tendency to die faster than ever and ad networks will be losing their customers quickly.
If you are in a losing rather than winning in the affiliate program you are currently promoting, maybe it is about time to consider going into the Adsense marketing and start earning some real cash.
Google is readily providing well written and highly relevant ads that are closely chosen to match the content on your pages. You do not have to look for them yourselves as the search engine will be the doing the searching for you from other peoples source.
You also don't have to spend time in choosing different kind of ads for different pages. Google makes it very easy for you, with no codes to mess around for different affiliate programs.
You will be able to concentrate on providing good and quality content, as the search engines will be the ones finding the best ads in which to put your pages on.
You are still allowed to add Adsense ads even if you already have affiliate links on your site. It is prohibited, however, to imitate the look and feel of the Google ads for your affiliate links. One of the things you can do, however, is to utilize Google's custom palette to customize your Google ads, making them to appear a part of the web page itself. The idea here is to match background and links to match the theme of your site. People on the internet today are trained to click on a link that is blue, and if your Google ads have the same theme as your web page, it makes the Google ads appear to be a portion of your "content."
You can also filter up to 200 URLs. This gives you a chance to block ads for the sites that do not meet your guidelines, and also block competitors. Remember that it is unavoidable that Adsense may be competing for some space on web sites that all other revenues are sharing.
Owners of small sites are allowed to plug a bit of a code into their sites and instantly have relevant text ads that appeal to your visitors appear instantly on your pages. If you own many sites, you only need to apply once. Then ,you are issued a unique "publisher ID", which can be used on any site you currently own. A small snippet of Javascript is placed on your site in the location you wish the ads to appear in, and generally speaking, the ads from Goggle will appear in minutes. This ends the hassle of having to apply to many affiliate programs, and keeping track of many different URL's and user ID's and passwords.
As Google ads are very easy to customize, and can be placed anywhere on your site you wish, you can experiment with placement, colors, and themes. Many tricks are available to the resourceful webmaster, including adding images in conjunction with your Google ads to make them more noticeable.
The payment rates can vary extremely. The payment you will be receiving per click depends on how much advertisers are paying per click to advertise with the use of the AdWords. Advertisers can pay as little as 5 cents and as high as $10-12, sometimes even more than that too. Some savvy lawyers are currently paying as high as $75 for advertising the keyword mesothelioma! And you, as the ad publisher, are earning a share of that money generated.
If your results remain stagnant, it can help if you try and build simple and uncluttered pages so that the ads can catch the visitors eyes more. It sometimes pay to differ from the usual things that people are doing already. Google has many tutorials, including a "heat chart" which shows you where the best placement for ads are. You will need an account to access these tutorials. Sign up for an Adsense account at https://www.google.com/adsense/?sourceid=aso&subid=ww-et-awhome&hl=en_US. It is also a refreshing sight for your visitor once they see something different for a change.
It is still wise to look at other peoples information and format your Adsense in a like manner. A wise old business axiom is to "find a good business model, then copy it." Let others do the hard work for you, and learn from a successful site. Just think about it as doing yourself a favor by not having to work too hard to know what content to have. Look to sites that have high page rank, and carefully observe their layouts, their content, and placement of their ads. A little time spent doing research can put dollars in your pocket down the road.
Publishers have the option of choosing to have their ads displayed only on a certain site or sites. You can also have them displayed on a large network of sites if you so desire. Google now has the option to allow other people to advertise on your site. This only makes good sense. If you are marketing to a tightly defined niche, you can place your own ads, written by you, on site that allow this option. The choice is yours, depending on what you think will work best to your advantage.
It is important to note that you cannot choose certain topics only. If you do this, search engines will not place Adsense ads on your site and you will be missing out a great opportunity in making hundreds and even thousands of dollars cash.
Topics to be avoided includes gambling, firearms, ammunition, tobacco or drugs. If you are being offered more cash in exchange of doing Adsense with these kinds, it is just like signing your own termination paper.
With all the information that people need in your hands already, all you have to do is turn Google Adsense into your own cash cow. It all boils down to a win-win situation both for the content site owners and the webmasters or publishers.
